Western Australia is a stunning place to visit and most people have quite a few ideas for where they want to go. Whether that’s snorkelling or on a wine tour, there are certainly plenty of options.
These days, if you want to head north of Perth there are even more options. Here are a few must-see stops on an Indian Ocean Drive.
1 – Lake Thetis
One of your first stops should be Lake Thetis, just off Hansen Bay Road. There, you’ll see some marvellous thrombolites and stromatolites. These are some of the oldest living fossils to be found anywhere on the planet.
2 – Jurien Bay
As you continue on your drive, you’ll find Jurien Bay. There’s a lot to see and do here.
You can go snorkelling, and see some incredible biodiversity in the Marine park, or you can go skydiving over the beach for a rather different view of the coast.
If you’re not feeling quite that adventurous but still want to see the marine life, there are some great charters and sea life safaris to choose from.
3 – Geraldton
If history is your thing, then a trip to the Colonial port city is well worth it. You’ll find the Greenough Central Historic Settlement along the way.
From there you can visit the Geraldton Museum to learn about the maritime history as well as see the aboriginal art gallery.
Be sure to head to the foreshore to sample some of the food from the local restaurants, and then head to the beach to do some surfing, or just watch those who are more accomplished than you are.
This is a great place for an overnight stay, too. There are lots of hotels and caravan parks in the area, so you can spend as long as you like exploring the sights.
4 – Lancelin
If you’re into sandboarding then the sand dunes here are perfect. Even if you’re a first-timer, you’ll find that it’s a fun and accessible activity.
You’ll probably fall over a lot, but the sand is soft and the scenery is stunning, so it’s all fun and games. If you’d rather windsurf, head to the beach. It’s always windy, and there are always surfers, whatever time of the year.
There’s a pub nearby too, so you can stop off for some much-needed refreshments whenever the mood strikes.
5 – Three Springs
If you’re visiting during July – October, then it’s well worth taking a short detour to the quaint country town of Three Springs so you can see the wildflowers.
This is a picturesque town at any time of the year, but when the Eucalyptus Rose Mallee is blooming it is even more spectacular.
There is some lovely heritage walks to explore, and lots of opportunities for bird watching, as well as water sports.
As you can see, the Indian Ocean Drive is an incredible route with lots of things to see and do. Whether you’re into water sports, bird watching, sandboarding, surfing, walking or history, there are plenty of opportunities for you.
The best way to do the Indian Ocean Drive is to take a trip over a few days. Five days is a good start, but you can spread it over longer if you have the chance and you’re unlikely to get bored thanks to the diversity of the area.
Take an RV and stop off at some of the caravan sites along the way, meet other tourists, soak in the scenery and give yourself a trip to remember. Exploring Western Australia under your own steam is truly something special.
