If you want to learn more about seven of the most popular rivers in Western Australia, then keep on reading!
1). Ord River
Ord River is situated in the Kimberley region of Western Australia and spans a whopping 320 kilometres length. Kununurra is the main town on Ord River and is also Kimberley’s youngest town.
Kununurra is also known as the centre for the Org River Irrigation Scheme, which was established in the 1960s as a way to develop Lake Argyle and the surrounding 14,000 hectares of land proposed for agriculture.
Fun fact: Lake Argyle is a major tourist attraction, and is known as Australia’s largest artificial lake by volume.
2). Swan River
Swan River is located in Perth and is a popular tourist attraction and an icon of Perth. It flows into the Indian Ocean at Fremantle, and the rivers Avon, Canning, and Helena serve as its three main tributaries.
You can find multiple walking trails along Swan River, along with fun cruises offered by various tour companies. Significant stops along the Swan River include Fremantle Harbour, Elizabeth Quay, Swan Valley, Alfred Cove, and Matilda Bay.
3). Avon River
The Avon River is notorious for hosting the Avon Descent, which is an international annual white water rafting event. Every year in August, hundreds of power boaters and canoeists visit the river to go water rafting along the 133-kilometre long river course.
Aside from the famous Avon Descent, you can also go picnicking by the river or take a photo walk. The pedestrian suspension bridge is known as the longest in Australia as it spans the whole river!
If you’re lucky, you can also see Northam’s white swan colony!
4). Blackwood River
Blackwood River is located in the southwest of Western Australia. In fact, it is the largest river in the southwest, and originates from the wheat belt town of Wagin, flowing through the Boyup Brook, Bridgetown, and Nannup, and finally ending in coastal Augusta.
You can find several scenic walking trails along the Blackwood River and partake in other activities such as bird watching, picnicking, and visiting the nearby towns of Bridgetown and Nannup, which are both a two and a half-hour drive south of Perth.
5). Fortescue River
Fortescue River is one of the most perfect places to go walking, canoeing, fishing, bird watching, and bush camping in Western Australia. It is a tropical oasis in the Pilbara region that is located in the Millstream Chichester National Park, which is a two-hour drive from Karratha.
You can find over 500 different species of plants in Fortescue, all of which offer amazing views that you have never seen before. Significant spots to visit include the Deep Reach Pool and the Crossings Pool, where you can go hiking, stargazing, camping, and more!
